A Local's Calendar For Candia, New Hampshire

The clue that Candia runs on a different clock than the towns around it is on High Street. Drive past number 774 on a Saturday in April and there are lambs. Drive past on a Saturday in October and there are pumpkins piled to the roofline. Drive past in late January and horses are pulling sleighs through the woods. The address does not change. The reason to stop does.

Most guides to small New Hampshire towns treat a place like Candia as a list of restaurants with a farm stand attached. That reads fine for someone passing through and useless for anyone who actually lives here. The truer picture is that Candia keeps a farm calendar, not a downtown calendar. Once you learn the two rhythms that drive the year, Charmingfare Farm and the third Saturday of the month at the Candia Farmers Market, the rest of the town's dining, library programs, golf, and family outings fall into a pattern you can plan around.

Charmingfare sets the season

Charmingfare Farm at 774 High Street is the metronome. It is a working farm with a zoo, a Sugar Shack, and a program schedule that turns over roughly every eight weeks.

Winter is horse-drawn ride season. From Saturday, January 10 through Saturday, February 28, 2026, Charmingfare runs horse-drawn rides from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with tickets ranging from $29 to $349, billed as an authentic New England winter adventure for families, couples, and friends. If you live in town and have never actually booked one, that is the low-tourist window to do it. The heavy Christmas crowds have gone home and the trails are quiet.

Spring is baby-animal season. Barnyard Babies and Beyond runs April 18, 19, 25, and 26, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at $29 per person, and the day includes horse-drawn farm rides, pony rides for an added fee, a tractor Touch-a-Truck, a live cow milking demonstration, animal feeding, and a craft shed. It is the event visiting grandparents ask you about, so put it in the calendar before they call.

Fall is the Pumpkin Festival and Children's Trick-or-Treat. The Pumpkin Festival includes a tractor train or horse-drawn wagon ride to the patch, a Cow Milking Contest, pumpkin decorating, and pony rides, with admission at $29 per person. Charmingfare also lends its grounds to the Children's Entrepreneur Market on October 11, a farmers' market run entirely by kids selling handmade crafts, baked goods, and their own inventions. If your household has an under-12 with a business idea, that is the deadline that matters.

Everything else the farm does, from the Teddy Bear Picnic, Reptile Day, concerts, magic shows, hayrides, horseback trail riding, winter sleigh rides, Christmas events, and the Sugar Shack, slots in around those anchors.

The third Saturday

The second rhythm is the Candia Farmers Market. Founded in June 2021 by the Agricultural Commission, it runs on the third Saturday of the month from June through October. Five Saturdays a year. That is the entire outdoor market season, and if you have lived here a while you already know it fills up fast.

The market's own description is that it brings seasonal produce, handmade crafts, baked goods, specialty items, and family activities together in one place. What that translates to on the ground is a Saturday morning where you can knock out the week's vegetables, grab bread and jam, and run into three neighbors before you get to your car. Regulars will tell you parking can be tough during the first hour, so arriving early and taking a walk before shopping is the practical move.

Here is what the year looks like if you overlay the two anchors:

Season Farm anchor Market anchor What to plan around it
January–February Horse-drawn rides at Charmingfare Closed Book a ride before the trails thaw
April Barnyard Babies and Beyond Closed Bring the kids, or the grandkids
June–October Rolling programming, then Pumpkin Festival Third Saturday of each month Farmers Market is the default Saturday
October Pumpkin Festival, Children's Entrepreneur Market Final market of the year Last outdoor market Saturday of the season
November–December Christmas events, Sugar Shack Closed Holiday photos and sleigh rides

Where dinner actually happens

Once you have Saturday morning handled, the question is where to eat when you do not want to cook. Candia is a small town, so the answer is a short list that regulars rotate through.

Cello's Farmhouse Italian is an authentic Italian restaurant in Candia serving handcrafted pasta, pizza, and cocktails in a farmhouse setting, and the same location hosts standup comedy and other live events. It is the closest thing Candia has to a special-occasion room without leaving town.

The Town Cabin Deli & Pub, Stubby's Diner, and The Barnyard Venue round out the in-town lineup. The Barnyard Venue is an outdoor restaurant, bar, and live event space with table seating under umbrellas, which means it flips from a nice-night dinner spot to a music venue depending on the week.

Just over the line into Raymond, The Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery is ranked number one of sixteen restaurants in Raymond on Tripadvisor with a 4.2 rating across 993 reviews. Chef Bobby Marcotte has been in the kitchen since day one, and the steakhouse is attached to the butcher shop, which is the practical reason many Candia households treat Tuckaway as a dual-purpose stop: dinner one night, meat counter run for the grill on Saturday. The butchery is open every day from 9 AM to 7 PM, with the kitchen running 11 AM to 8 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 9 PM Friday and Saturday.

If none of those work on a given night, the practical fallback is Auburn Pitts or Auburn Tavern a short drive west on Route 101.

The rest of the map

Three more places anchor the week and get skipped in most write-ups.

Candia Woods Golf Links. A working public course in town. If you are picking a golf home for a routine rather than a destination, this is why some families choose Candia over places that would send them to Manchester or Bedford for a tee time.

Candia Springs Adventure Park. Candia Springs runs sports and adventure programming through the summer with a September 12, 2026 event scheduled. Useful when the ten-year-old is bored and the pumpkin festival is still six weeks away.

Smyth Public Library. The library's summer and fall schedule includes music programming on August 12, 2026 and July 15, 2026, among other dates. Library concerts in a town this size are worth knowing about because they never post far in advance and the room is small.

A weekend template that actually works

Put it all together and a good Candia Saturday in September looks like this: farmers market at the town center in the morning, lunch at Cello's or a run to the Tuckaway butcher counter for the grill, an afternoon at Charmingfare with whichever kids or visiting relatives are on hand, and a quiet evening. In January, swap the market for a horse-drawn ride. In April, swap the pumpkins for lambs. The infrastructure does not really change. The pictures on your phone do.

That is the argument for staying put on a weekend instead of driving to Manchester or the Seacoast. Not that Candia has more than those places, it does not, but that what it has is close enough together to build a real routine around.

One planning note for the year ahead

The town is currently running Candia2026, a community process for residents to weigh in on where they see the town now and their priorities for the next ten years. If any of the rhythms above matter to your household, that is where the input goes. Master plan revisions in New Hampshire towns tend to happen once a decade and then set the rules for a long time after.

Candia rewards residents who learn its calendar. If you are thinking about a move within Southern New Hampshire and want a candid read on how daily life in Candia compares to Auburn, Hooksett, or Bedford, contact Michelle at Michelle Gannon to discuss your next move.
